What is ChatGPT?
Recently, ChatGPT has become a hot topic, trending across various platforms. Developed by the American AI research lab OpenAI, ChatGPT is a new chatbot model that can engage in conversations by learning and understanding human language. It interacts based on the context of the conversation and assists users in completing a range of tasks.
This AI language model makes it easy to write emails, papers, scripts, create business proposals, compose poetry and stories, and even code or debug programs. Many users who have interacted with ChatGPT have expressed amazement, stating, “There’s nothing ChatGPT can’t accomplish if you can think of it.” Within just two months of its launch, ChatGPT surpassed 100 million active users.
Is ChatGPT Reliable?
With curiosity and skepticism, we delve into whether ChatGPT is as reliable as it seems. In its self-introduction, ChatGPT is candid about its capabilities: it can remember previous conversations and adjust its responses based on user prompts, but it occasionally makes mistakes, and the real-time accuracy of its database is still under scrutiny.
When chatting with ChatGPT, users can get straight to the point or explore topics in depth. On serious issues, ChatGPT provides logical and well-articulated responses. Although it may not present groundbreaking ideas, its clear and rapid expression is impressive.
Who Will ChatGPT Replace?
The rapid adoption of ChatGPT could disrupt many industries. Chinmay Hegde, an associate professor at NYU’s Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department, believes that jobs in news, higher education, graphic design, and software development are at risk of being replaced by AI. For example, The Guardian had ChatGPT write an article back in 2020, yielding mixed results. Hegde noted, “It excels at copy editing and summarizing, but it struggles with effective fact-checking.”
In education, The New York Post has pointed out that professors and teachers may be replaced by AI-driven courses. Sandra Wachter from the Oxford Internet Institute warns that if students start using ChatGPT, they are not only outsourcing their essay writing but also their critical thinking.
As AI technologies like AIGC (AI-generated content) become more efficient in various fields, will interviewers, writers, and designers face unemployment? How should we approach this technological innovation?
When faced with challenges from new technologies, our responses can lead to different outcomes. Just as the advent of photography pressured portrait painters, some chose to abandon painting, while others adapted or remained committed to their craft. The result was a flourishing of diverse art forms and unprecedented growth in the art market. As ChatGPT suggests, instead of fearing job loss to AI, we should harness our creativity and initiative to leverage new technologies and tools to enhance our efficiency and quality of life. After all, AI is an extension of human capability, and the true protagonists of society are us.
Of course, technological innovation must be governed by laws and regulations. We cannot allow science and technology to run rampant; we must uphold ethical and legal standards to protect the hard work of every creator and foster positive interactions that promote the development of artificial intelligence.
The Booming AI Market
Google and Baidu Join the Race
On February 6, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the conversational AI application Bard would be opened to early testers and made available to the public in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, in response to reports about Baidu’s plans to launch a Chinese version of ChatGPT, Baidu stated that its “Wenxin Yiyan” project, known in English as ERNIE Bot, is currently in the final stages before launch, with public access expected in March. Baidu also remarked that ChatGPT represents a milestone in AI development, indicating that AI technology has reached a critical point and companies need to prepare accordingly.
